Chapter 8

Bastion,

I met someone. Her name is Mara. She was paired in marriage to a buffoon called Wessel Danforth, the quartermaster here.

She got herself into some trouble with a demon. One found her on her travels to Bolwerk. It had taken possession of a wild dog and promised to reward her with treasures if she’d grant it passage inside her body for one day. She refused, but the dog continued to follow her all the way to the barracks. Priests like to blame witches when demons hang around, so shortly after arriving, she asked for my help in getting rid of it.

We chased it from the barracks and then tracked it through the woods just beyond the city walls for hours. When we found it, we confronted it. The demon bit me hard in the shoulder. Its teeth were so close to my neck, it frightens me to think about how near it came to killing me. I managed to hurt it badly enough with Tortua fire that it took off and didn’t return. Mara healed my injury, and now I have a friend.

It was hard at first, writing letters that you’d never read, but at times there’s something soothing about it. I no longer feel the compulsion to attempt to entertain you with my words. I can craft any message as I please, leave them riddled with errors and scribbles and gushing thoughts and know that it is forever safe from prying eyes.

And yet, there’s an open wound in my chest when I reflect on the fact that your prying eyes will never see my scribbles. I’ve always liked your eyes.

I miss you.

Every day.
